Embracing Transformation—Releasing Issues Stored in Our Tissues

Have you ever noticed how emotional stress can lead to physical discomfort? Maybe you’ve felt tightness in your shoulders during a tough work week or an upset stomach when you’re anxious. Your body holds onto emotional and psychological stress, often storing it within your tissues.

The Mind-Body Connection

Neurologically, our brains play a significant role in how we process and store emotions within our bodies. The right side of the brain innervates the left side of our body—our “feminine” side. This side is connected to emotions, feelings, and intuitive aspects of ourselves. It is associated with creativity and an abstract, intuitive approach to life. This is the part of us that focuses on being, receiving, and relating to others. Imbalances on this side may reflect unresolved female relationships or conflicts within these attributes in ourselves.

In contrast, the left side of the brain innervates the right side of our body—our “masculine” side. This side is linked to logical, analytical, and objective thinking, governing verbal communication and action. It’s about doing, initiating, giving, and often aligns with our career-oriented selves. Therefore, if you experience an injury on the right side of your body, it may relate to unresolved male issues.

When my father was dying, I experienced severe pain in my right shoulder that radiated down my arm. While acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and physiotherapy provided temporary relief, the pain never completely resolved. After his passing, I came to realize that physical pain can sometimes be easier to address than the emotional pain beneath it. When I allowed myself to truly feel the sadness surrounding his loss, over time, the pain in my shoulder began to subside.

Understanding Stored Emotions

Sometimes, we carry the weight of emotions that aren’t even ours. This can happen within families and close relationships, where we unknowingly absorb the emotional burdens of others. These emotions can become stored in our bodies, manifesting as physical pain or tension.

Recently, I experienced this firsthand during a deep massage. As the therapist worked through particularly painful areas, I allowed myself to relax into the pain and fully feel the emotions associated with it. To my surprise, it brought up issues that I had been holding onto that weren’t mine to bear. This experience highlighted how deeply intertwined our emotional and physical well-being truly is.

Acknowledging and releasing stored emotions is an essential part of the healing process. Practices like deep tissue massage, Qigong, yoga, nature walks, breathwork, and meditation can help us gain insight—our “inner sight”—into our bodies. By becoming mindful of how we may be carrying others’ emotional burdens, we can set healthier boundaries and care for ourselves more compassionately.

As we move through this season of change, let’s take a moment to tune into our bodies, acknowledge what we’re holding onto, and embrace the opportunity to let go and release what is no longer serving us. By doing so, we honor the natural process of transformation and make space for new growth.

Let’s welcome this fall season as a time for renewal—both in nature and within ourselves.
